1,000 pets burned to death in UK pet factory

UK April 2010

Fire causes unbelievable suffering and tragedy for over 1,000 beautiful animals when a pet breeding factory burned four sheds that housed guinea pigs also known as cavies, rabbits and other small pets.

Guinea pigs make wonderful pets if given affection, correct diet, correct housing. Consider buying from a guinea pig rescue and save a little cavy who will thank you forever with love and joy.

The fire occurred in the early hours on Tuesday morning.

Devon and Cornwall police confirmed that the buildings were used for breeding domestic pets for sale to the pet industry.

The guinea pigs and rabbits were trapped in their cages as the fire raged.  The blaze was so intense that fire fighters could not save any of the animals after three hours.  The owner of the animal factory known as “Cholewell Pets”, Karen Gregory called the fire brigade when she saw fire sweeping through her four barns, vehicles and caravan at a farm in Lewdown, near Okehampton, Devon.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established however police are investigating the possibility of an electrical fault.

The story of these beautiful guinea pigs, rabbits and other small animals burning alive has spread around the world on news sites and blogs.
