The internet is now buzzing with messages from pet lovers who are rescuing pets around Australia.
People are banding together to help abandoned and homeless pets and other animals. Social media is playing a big part in the drive to get as many pets a home as possible. Pet foster is becoming quite popular with people taking on homeless dogs, cats, rabbits, horses and other animals and caring for them in their own homes. This relieves the animal shelters and provides spaces for more shelter dogs, cats, rabbits or paddocks for horses.
The types of pet animals that are commonly the recipients of pet rescue shelters and foster carers are: dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and horses.
Wildlife rescue has been traditionally a known and publicly approved phenomenon with people doing short courses to become wildlife carers.
This activity has now extended to pets with a burgeoning growth in animal welfare awareness and pet rescue groups which can take the form of just a few people who care about animals getting together and forming a social group or others who form an incorporated association. Some are just individuals that offer their time as a volunteer in an animal shelter or dog pound.
Facebook is one of the social marketing mediums used by many involved in pet rescue with people posting pets for adoption or sadly dogs on death row in the hope of saving them before their time is up. Even a special language of the pet rescuers is developing such as shortcuts for the euphemism of dog euthanasia ‘put to sleep’ now taking the short and recognised facebook form of ‘PTS’.
