Next month will see the introduction of very tough penalties for animal cruelty with fines of up to $20,000 or two years jail. The laws will cover animal fighting activities. The new laws increase the power of animal welfare inspectors who will be able to enter farms, council pounds, circuses, puppy farms and private or government owned property without permission.
A new offence will also be introduced of 'aggravated animal cruelty' which will come with a $50,000 fine or a four year jail term.
