This full day workshop is an essential learning experience for all companion parrot owners, bird trainers, behaviourists and veterinary staff. STEP UP will be Barbara’s only appearance in Australia in 2009. She will be supported on the day by a team of Australian avian trainers and educators – Nicholas Bishop (Taronga Zoo), Peta Clarke (Animal Training Solutions) and Jim McKendry (Parrot Behaviour & Enrichment Consultations). The Saturday June 6th workshop has been designed to achieve the following objectives:
Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of behaviour analysis including positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment and negative punishment.
Understand ways in which we can empower our parrots.
Practice and improve skills for reading and interpreting body language.
Overview of problem solving strategies for behaviour problems typically presented by parrot species
Learn the appropriate definition, use and application of the following: cue, bridging stimulus, shaping with approximations and capturing behaviour.
Learn strategies to identify different reinforcers, level of interest in reinforcers and how to improve motivation for reinforcers.
Inspire you to apply what you have learned at home with your parrot.
Learn to pair the power of Positive Reinforcement with careful observations of parrot body language to shape the behaviour of interactive, entertaining and well-behaved companion parrots.

Sunday 7 June 2009
Special Practical Workshop – limited to 12 persons only
Location: Samford
Time: 8.30am – 1pm
This is an additional `practical experience’ for a strictly limited number of lucky participants. Sunday’s workshop will enable you to learn the training techniques of professional bird trainers with live parrots onsite under the guidance of four experienced avian trainers.
Due to the level of interest in this opportunity to engage with Barbara and the training team, a ballot will be held from registrations received for the Saturday June 6th workshop.
Sunday’s session is limited to 12 participants due to the use of birds and access to trainers in an intimate avicultural environment. We know that it will be over subscribed and to avoid the chaos of a ‘first in, best dressed’ scenario, it was decided to select participants by ballot to keep it fair for all concerned.
The closing date for this ballot will be April 19 with all successful persons notified by April 21. If you are interested in being in the ballot to secure a place for this additional event then you must indicate your intention to be included in the ballot via the registration form check box. An additional registration fee of $145 will then apply to all successful participants. Good luck!
Morning Tea and a BBQ lunch will be provided on the day.
PLEASE NOTE: No pet birds allowed at this event.
