Dairy farmers are barred from cutting cows' tails in California from January 2010 onwards. California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill known as SB-135 that will ban the practice of cutting off dairy cows' tails, making California the first U.S.A. state to adopt such a law.

Tails which are useful for cows to get rid of flies are systematically cut off by the dairy industry without aesthetic so that the cows are supposedly easier to milk. Sad but true. A good move by Governor Schwarzenegger. For more on this topic read B & N Niman’s article on food.theatlantic.com.
