Initially the discovery of the first Bronzeback Snake-Lizard was kept secret when Peter McDonald found the first bronzeback while he was surveying a rare tree species in the Northern Territory. The discovery was not announced then because it was decided to gather more information and see if more could be found first so they could be given a conservation status.
In 1897 the very first bronzeback was collected by an Irishman, Paddy Byrne when he was employed at the Charlotte Waters telegraph station. He was a self-taught biologist who gained knowledge and specimens from Aboriginal people in the area.
