BIRD BEHAVIOUR, a couple of tips on handling and caring for your parrot

WING CLIPPING:  I recommend that pet birds be given as much time out of the cage as possible.  IF you have good control of doors and windows leave wings unclipped.  There is a joy in seeing your bird fly and fly to you!  IF there is a risk then trim the first 6 flight feathers on each side but only to the little line of feathers that fall across them.  Click to see article on wing clipping by an avian vet.

Trim one wing or two?
Both wings should be clipped evenly to allow more balanced attempts at flight. Birds with only one wing clipped feel weird.
Clipping only one wing can throw the bird off balance resulting in crash landings and severe injury to the beak, keel (breastbone) or legs. Vets see many parrots with breast injuries from incorrect wing clips.

COVERING THE BIRD CAGE: Cover your bird completely at night.  Use a light sheet in summer and only partially cover, and a thicker material e.g. blanket in winter.  During the day have one area of the cage covered at all times. The bird will use to hide when scared and rest in.  This can be known as 'the bird loft' as it will be high in the cage.  The 'loft' should have a perch for resting and sleeping.  The 'loft' area would be covered top, sides, and back.  A bird needs a protected area to hide from preditors in order to feel safe.  It will return to the high 'loft' when insecure for any reason.  It will also sleep there.

POSITION OF THE BIRD CAGE: Safe place is the first consideration.  The cage should be well above floor level: remember that birds in the wild live in high trees.  It is also easier to interact with your bird at above waist level.  It is easier also to pull out the tray to clean the cage.  The cage should be in a well ventilated part of the house and in the area most frequented by the family.  Birds are a flock animal and need company.  Place the cage so that it receives the early morning sun.  Outside on a veranda is ok but only if safe from predator birds, dogs and cats and snakes.  Best not to leave the cage outside if you are not in easy reach to protect your pet bird.  You can build a big backyard aviary to put your bird in during the day if you are not home and still want it to have sun and rain which are both really good for your bird.  If you place a house plant near the cage ensure that it is not poisonous to birds.  A plant near the cage is handy for emptying your water dish into and helps the plant!  It also adds a natural effect to the bird's environment and softens the decore near the cage.

The Cockatiel's scientific name is (Nymphicus hollandicus).  Cockatiels are an Australian native parrot.  They are endemic to Australia which means they are native ONLY TO Australia.  Cockatiels are the smallest of the Cacatuidae (Cockatoo family).  In the wild they eat seeding grasses, nuts off gum trees, bottle brush & other trees from the calistamon family. Hand reared cockatiels make a simply wonderful pet.  As with all pets they require daily care and attention and a correct diet and clean area.  They also require gentle and confident handling.  Clever Birds will advise you on caring and handling your new pet cockatiel.  These are sold under the aviary name of Clever Birds.  Regardless of where you buy your new pet cockatiel or other parrot, Clever Birds will help you with free advice and care sheets.  Remember that you can find a a bird vet on this site by returning to the Bird Section and looking for the Vet category.
